Guide to Okta Access Requests

There are three ways to request access in Okta:

  1. Okta Dashboard
  2. Slack — via /access command
  3. Slack — via Okta Apps

Below are detailed instructions for how to use each of these options.

  1. Go to ww.okta.com and log in.
  2. Locate and click on the Okta Access Request tile.
  3. Search for the application or role in the App Catalog.
  4. Select Request Access.
  5. Enter your justification and click Submit New Request.

  1. Open Slack.
  2. In any DM or channel, type: /access request and press Enter.
  3. Select the Slack workspace you want to run the command in.
    Note: If you are a Weekend Health employee, choose WeekendHealth. For WW employees, choose WW before running the command.
  4. Click I Need Something Else.
  5. In the pop-up window, enter the name of the application or role you need and click Continue.
  6. Enter your justification and click Submit New Request.

To use the Slack — Okta Apps method, you must first submit at least one request using the /access request command. This installs the Okta Slack app into your Slack profile.

Once your initial request is completed, you can use the Okta Slack app for future access requests:

  1. Open Slack.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of your sidebar and locate the Apps section.
  3. Find and click on Okta.
  4. Ensure you are on the Home tab.
  5. Use the Choose Resources dropdown to search for the application or role you need.
  6. Enter your justification and click Submit New Request.

This section is for people managers who need to review and approve or deny access requests submitted by their team members.

A. Reviewing requests in the Okta Dashboard
  1. Go to ww.okta.com and sign in.
  2. Click on the Okta Access Request tile.
  3. Navigate to the My Approvals (or Pending Approvals) tab to see all requests waiting for your review.
  4. Click on a request to view details, including:
    • Who submitted the request
    • Application or role being requested
    • Justification entered by the requester
  5. After reviewing, choose Approve or Deny, and (if prompted) add a short comment explaining your decision.
B. Approving from Slack / email notifications
  1. When a team member submits a request, you may receive a notification via email and/or the Okta app in Slack.
  2. In Slack, look for a message from the Okta app indicating that an approval is pending.
  3. Click the link or buttons in the notification (such as View Request or Review in Okta) to open the request details.
  4. Review the information and choose Approve or Deny.

Both requesters and managers can see where an access request is in the approval process and whether any additional action is needed.

A. Tracking status in the Okta Dashboard
  1. Go to ww.okta.com and sign in.
  2. Click on the Okta Access Request tile.
  3. For users: open the My Requests or Request History tab to see:
    • Each request you have submitted
    • The current status (Pending, Approved, Denied, Completed, etc.)
    • Where it is in the workflow (e.g., waiting on manager approval, waiting on app owner)
  4. For managers: use the My Approvals / Pending Approvals view to confirm whether you have already taken action or if a request is still waiting on you.
